What Are Lightroom Presets?

I'm sure by now the majority of us have heard about Lightroom Presets. Whether it's from a friend, your favorite blogger, or an ad you've seen on Facebook or Instagram - presets are being talked about everywhere.

In this blog post we'll walk you through what Lightroom is, what presets are, what makes presets different than a normal photo filter, and how to use them.

Let's start here. What's Lightroom?

Lightroom is a photo editing program created by Adobe to make editing your photos as easy as 1, 2, 3! (No, really - it's extremely simple to navigate). Thousands of photographers all over the world use this program as a means to create those stunning photos you've seen on the web.

There are two versions of Lightroom:

1.) Adobe Lightroom Classic CC

2.) Adobe Lightroom CC

Lightroom Classic CC is a paid subscription version of Lightroom ONLY for desktop. Lightroom CC is a FREE version (which makes it cheap & easy for those wanting to edit their everyday photos) and is offered for both mobile & desktop.

What are PRESETS?

Have you ever noticed that the majority of the bloggers on IG typically have a feed that looks cohesive and visually appealing? They're most likely using presets to give their photos a uniform look so that their feed follows this vibe.

Presets are a saved combination of lighting/color settings within Lightroom that will give your photo a *unique* look. You must be using the Lightroom app to use presets.

Lightroom presets can have maaany different looks and styles! They can be dark & moody, light & airy, white & clean, colorful, etc. When choosing presets, it's important to think about what style of photo you like and what you're wanting your feed/blog/website to look like.

Essentially, presets ARE filters for your photos. They change the way your raw images appear.

HOWEVER! Filters like you'd find on Instagram or Facebook or any other photo editing app tend to be much more harsh on your images and you don't have the freedom to adjust any settings within the filter.

When you apply a preset to your photo in the Lightroom app, you're able to adjust things like the lighting/highlights/coloring within the actual preset to get the look you're wanting on the photo you're editing. Not all photos are equal - they'll have different lighting & coloring which is why it's nice to be able to adjust and tweak as needed.

So... How Do I Use Presets Once I Purchase Them?

We always include an installation guide with every purchase to walk you through how to get them downloaded and saved into your Lightroom for future use.

But basically - when you purchase presets, they will be in a file format called DNG. They will first look like a photo which needs to be opened in your Lightroom library. Once you have the preset photo open in Lightroom you simply click the three dots at the top right and choose "create preset" and this will save your preset to your User Presets folder for future use!

*The User Presets folder can be found in the Presets tab which is at the bottom of Lightroom when you scroll to the right. If it's your very first time using presets then you'll also have to click where it says "Color" toward the left and a menu will drop down and that's where the User Presets folder will be*

Whenever you want to edit your photos, you just open them in LR and apply the preset you're wanting! That's it!

Using Presets can sound confusing and like a hassle at first. But once you understand Lightroom and know how to navigate it, it makes editing your photos SO easy & helps create that perfect cohesiveness amongst your images.
